Stay healthy in a Chinese way:

Chinese medical practice, including various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, and massage (Tui Na), has more than 2,500 years of history. Many Asians like Chinese and Singaporean still apply Chinese therapies in daily life to stay healthy. Even the government of the city with the longest life expectancy, the Hong Kong government, promotes Chinese medicine.  It is not based upon scientific knowledge but has recently begun gaining global recognition.

This traditional Chinese wisdom is not limited to curing diseases but also keeps you stay healthy and strong. Chinese medical soup is a good example. Chinese like to put different Chinese herbals into soups to strengthen particular parts of their body, such as lung and stomach. They also employ different herbals according to seasons. In autumn and winter, the Chinese employ herbals like Solomon’s Seal, which can moisten the lung and throat.

Instead of soup, herbal tea is also popular in the Chinese community. People believed such infusion of herbs originating from China’s Guangdong province contains medicinal properties to cool “internal heat” and to treat a range of health problem. When compared to the soup, herbal tea is much more bitter.

Some of the westerns may find acupuncture horrible as acupuncturists will insert needles into a person’s body to release their pain. However, people who suffer from headache, neck pain, and low back pain can benefit from acupuncture, which is proved to be effective in research carried out in Germany.  In 2003, the World Health Organization also listed several conditions in which they say acupuncture has been proven effective. These include high and low blood pressure, tennis elbow, chemotherapy-induced nausea, etc.

Chinese medical practice may not sound scientific to you, but it is effective to keep you healthy. Try to be open-minded to it and to adopt it in your daily life.  You can experience it in your Asian journey.
